Robert T. McBeth
December 28, 1908 - July 11, 2010
Robert T. McBeth (Bob) was born December 28, 1908 in Osceola, Nebraska. One of seven children born to Robert H. and May Lewis McBeth, he was raised on a homestead farm. After high school graduation he set out to see the country, spending time as a migrant worker, a taxi driver, and eventually settled in Pasadena, California where he began his long career with the U. S. Postal Service. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1946 as a 1st Lieutenant after a tour of duty in Guam. In 1952 he moved his wife and two children to Beaverton, Oregon. From 1955 to 1973 home was Scappoose, Oregon. He spent his postal career in Oregon as a rural letter carrier. Bob was adventurous and fun loving, enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, camping, boating, hunting, photography, and traveling. Bob was a dependable member of the Baptist churches he attended through the years. His retirement in 1966 opened the door to travel that took him and wife, Thelma, across the United States, to destinations in Europe, Israel, New Zealand, Greece, Scandinavia and Russia. Retirement found them at home in Bend, King City, and finally Newberg, Oregon. For many years winters were spent in Desert Hot Springs, California. Bob was passionate about playing pool and he became known as practically unbeatable. He continued to play until the last months of his life. On Sunday, July 11, 2010, Robert T. McBeth died when he was 101 years, 6 months and 13 days of age. Surviving and left to honor his life are: Bob’s step son, Michael Green and wife, Wendy of Astoria; his daughter, Eileen Reid and husband Richard of Happy Valley; his grandchildren, Matthew Reid and wife Brandy of Portland, David Reid of Calabasas, California, and Melissa Burch and husband Justin of Oregon City; great-granddaughters, Hannah, Audrey, Sydney Reid and Maren Burch, and those who have come to know and appreciate him where he has lived and worked.
