Leonard Brewster Woody

January 9, 1932 - January 16, 2019

Leonard Brewster Woody was born in Liberty Arizona on Jan 9, 1932. He was a welder in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956, and a lifelong member of the VFW and American Legion. Leonard met and married Opal Hayworth in Arizona. They had no children together. She passed away in 2000 after being married for 42 years, one month one day and 3 hours. They moved to Newberg in 1968 and Leonard worked at the Publishers Paper, later known as Smurfit Newspaper. He gained the nickname “Yuka Dew” because he hailed from Arizona, but most of us knew him simply as “Woody”. He retired in 1995 after 27 years as a shift millwright. After he retired, the neighbors all said you could tell time by when his truck came and went in his driveway. He made his regular rounds delivering cardboard and newspaper for FISH every Monday. For 14 years he worked refurbishing old bicycles with the Retired Re-Cyclers group. They donate to bikes to children who have none and Woody said the best part was seeing the “big smiles on those little faces”. Ironically, Woody never rode a bike in his life. For fun Woody liked to fish and once caught a 46lb Chinook salmon at the coast. He made frequent trips to Spirit Mountain Casino for the slot machine fun and the $5.95 all you can eat breakfast as well regular visits for meals and conversation with the crew at Shari’s restaurant. Woody will be cremated and have his ashes spread in the Willamette River at Rogers Landing. He requested no services and said he lived a long good life. Donations may be made in Woody’s name either Newberg FISH or the Shriners Children’s Hospital, who operated on his baby sister at no charge in 1943.
