Julie Isaacson

April 2, 1945 - February 10, 2020

Julie Isaacson was born on April 2, 1945, in Ann Arbor, MI to Alvin and Nancy Isaacson. She passed away from pancreatic cancer on February 10, 2020, at her home in Newberg. Julie attended UC Berkeley where she received a Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics and English. After a short period of teaching, Julie pursued a career in medicine and found her true calling. She earned her M.D. at the University of Southern California, and went on to become the first female orthopedic surgeon resident at Oregon Health and Sciences University. During her residency, she met Matson Haug. The two quickly fell in love and were married on June 24, 1984. After completing medical school, Julie and Mat moved to Newberg where Julie began her practice. Many in the community first met Julie as their surgeon at Providence Newberg Hospital. With her passion to connect with her patients, many of these relationships blossomed into lasting friendships. Julie retired from her practice in 2009 shortly before she was initially diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Julie was an integral and committed member of the Portland and Newberg communities. Julie and Mat developed a love for dancing, becoming members of the Portland Heights Dance Club. Julie went on to win several first place titles in regional dance competitions. Her favorite dance was the energetic West Coast Swing, which matched her spirit. She volunteered with CASA, SMART Reading program and Portland Audubon Society, and participated in overseas medical trips and the Rotary Club. In her private life, Julie was a lifelong learner - a talented knitter, a global traveler who had been to 6 continents, and an avid reader. She also loved hiking, cycling, gardening, bird watching and cooking delicious meals to share. She found great joy and believed in investing in the next generation. Never shying away from a challenge, she championed hard work and following one’spassions. Julie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Matson Haug on February 3, 2016. Julie is survived by her step-children Christine Towner, Jeffrey Haug, Peter Haug; siblings Joe Isaacson, Johnny Isaacson; cousins Amy Kendis, Maggie Kendis, Jeff Nowell, Greg Nowell; grandchildren David Towner, Joshua Haug, Adam Li, Sara Haug, Grace Li-Haug, Kristen Haug, Conan Lee, Julianna Haug, Joel Towner, Mayah Haug, Noah Haug, Ezra Haug; and her beloved pets- dog Chapito, cat Susie Q, and African Gray parrot Jimbo. All loved her dearly. The memorial service has been postponed until further notice. Please send cards/flowers to this address: 1524 E Hess Creek Ct, Newberg, OR 97132
