John was the oldest of three children. He spent his childhood in the Puget Sound area of Washington. John entered the US Navy on September 10, 1934 in San Diego, California at the age of nineteen and spent his four years on the USS Altair, a floating mechanical ship serving destroyers in the pacific fleet. He married Ruby Ellen Hamilton on September 10, 1939 in Riverside, California, living there a year. He hired on with the San Diego Gas and Electric Company in April of 1941, living in Chula Vista, California, building their first house. Their daughter Janet was born while they were in the San Diego area. In 1954 SDG&E built a new power plant in Carlsbad, California and John helped get it on line, buying property in Carlsbad and building a new home. He was a supervisor at the Encino plant until retirement in the summer of 1976. He and Ruby then moved to Sherwood, Oregon in 1977 to live by their daughter and her family until Ruby passed away in 1997. While living in Sherwood he became a member of the Sherwood Lions Club, enjoying his hobbies in his workshop; building a steam boat, his Divco truck, plus being a part of restoration of the steam boat-tug on the Willamette River in Portland and doing a little farming on their property. He was a life time member of the USS Altair AD-11 Association, Oregon Maritime Museum in Portland, Divco Club of America and the Northwest Steam Society. In 1999 he moved back to the state of Washington residing in Port Orchard until his death. Surviving and left to honor his life are: His daughter Janet Ward of Sherwood; two grandsons and their wives; three great-grandsons and those who have come to know and appreciate him where he has lived and worked. His Funeral Service will be Monday, March 19, at 1:00 p.m. in Attrell's Sherwood Funeral Chapel, a Golden Rule Funeral Home. Concluding Service will be at Gibbs Cemetery, Sherwood following service. Arrangements are in the care of Attrell's Sherwood Funeral Chapel.
