Jack B. Swonger Jack B. Swonger was born the son of Winfred and Ellen (Gilpin) Swonger on Friday, February 9, 1929 in Sharon, Kansas. Jack moved to Newberg in 1936 and attended the local schools. He graduated from Newberg Union High School in 1947, and married Darlene Zemke on October 18th of that same year. He worked at the Pulp and Paper Mill and Western Auto in Newberg, as well as Williams Air Control in Portland and Tualatin before going to work for A-Dec, retiring in 1996. He was a member of Joyful Servant Lutheran Church and a volunteer with the Newberg Fire Department for twenty years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. Jack was a family man who enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, traveling in his motor home and spending time with his dog Maggie. On Saturday, October 1, 2011, Jack Swonger died at his residence when he was eighty-two years, seven months and twenty-two days of age. Surviving and left to honor his life are: His wife Darlene; four daughters, Susan Owen of Dundee, Sally Moon of Newberg, Sharon Vo of Newberg, and Sandra Peterson of Newberg; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and those who have come to know and appreciate him where he has lived and worked. His parents, five brothers and five sisters preceded him in death. His Memorial Service will be Saturday, October 8, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. in Joyful Servant Lutheran Church, Newberg. Chapel Viewing and Visitation hours are Wednesday, October 5, 2011, 10:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Thursday, October 6, 2011, 8:00 a.m. until noon at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, a Golden Rule funeral home.
