Frank Norman Haskins

October 26, 1919 - April 20, 2014

In Loving Memory Frank Norman Haskins October 26, 1919 to April 20, 2014 Frank was born in a sod house on the prairie in Thoeny, Montana. He was the fourth of 6 children born to John Frederick and Grace Dell Main Haskins. In 1921, the family moved to Pretty Creek, South Dakota which was 13 miles from town. Frank began his education being “home schooled” because he was the only student in the first grade in the local one-room school house. For the 2nd grade, he was still the only student, but he attended school and walked the 1½ miles to get there. In 1927, Frank’s parents along with their 6 children moved to Jefferson, Oregon coming west in a newly purchased 1926 Model T. They lived in Jefferson for 1 year moved to Silverton for 1 year then on to Scotts Mills. Frank graduated from Scotts Mills High School in 1937. In February 1938, Frank had a life-changing experience with the Lord and felt a call to preach. In 1940, Frank Haskins continued his life-long pursuit of studying by enrolling in Cascade College and graduated with majors in Bible and English. He began preaching in churches in 1941 and became a pastor in 1944 at Marion, Oregon. He attended Western Evangelical Seminary for 2 years taking all their Theology and Bible courses. Over the next 60 years, Frank pastored in Friends Churches in Oregon at Scotts Mills, South Salem, Eugene and Rosedale and in California at Inglewood Friends Church. He also preached at various churches throughout Oregon as a fill-in minister and evangelist at revival meetings. Frank was a boys’ camp counsellor for 25 years at Twin Rocks. He had continued interest in Scotts Mills Homecoming, Twin Rocks, George Fox sports and music departments. His love of learning included opera, classical music, bird and wildflower identification and stamp collecting. He enjoyed family visits, writing poetry, hiking, camping, photography, whistling and singing. Frank Haskins is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lois; son, Norman (Gloria) Haskins of Salem; daughter, Karen (Greg) Potter of Portland. Grandchildren: Scott McDonald, Ryan McDonald, Michele Balfour, Janae Purcell. Great-Grandchildren: Jake, Elsa and Liam McDonald; Wyatt and Graciley McDonald; and Henry Purcell. Daughter Ilene Warkentin preceded him in death.Frank was the last surviving member of the 6 siblings. Frank Haskins’ memorial service will be at Newberg Friends Church on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 1:00 pm.
