Dorothy May Schlichting
December 29, 1920 - June 5, 2012
Dorothy May Schlichting Dorothy May Schlichting was born at home in Filer, Idaho, on Wednesday, December 29, 1920. She was the daughter of Archie and Anna (Matthiesen) Young. Her father was a logger, and the family moved to Oregon for his work when she was a young child. They lived in Sandy and Timber, and she graduated from Forest Grove High School. After completing one year of study at Oregon State College, on June 27, 1941, Dorothy married Erwin Schlichting at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sherwood, OR, the church established by his ancestors. They lived on and operated the Schlichting Family Farm all their married life, milking cows, growing feed, and raising cattle, pigs and four Schlichting farm hands. Dorothy enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, canning and keeping the family history. Tending her flower gardens provided hours of pleasure and gifts of flowers. Cub Scouts and 4-H were a part of her activities as her children grew up, as well as volunteering with the Elections Board. Dorothy’s faith was a very important part of her life. As a long-time member of St. Paul’s, she lived her faith through her regular attendance and contributions in several areas including singing in the choir and L.W.M.L. Dorothy suffered a stroke in 2010 and from then on found getting out more difficult. She was able to continue to live in her home on their farm near Sherwood, where she died on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the age of 91 years, 5 months and 7 days. Erwin preceded her in death on June 2, 2000. Surviving and left to honor her life are: daughter, Kathleen Torson and her husband, Robert, of LaConner, Washington; three sons, Erwin Jr. and Raymond, both living at the farm and Robert Schlichting and his wife, Elanna, of Portland; one grandson, Aaron Schlichting and his wife, Lisa; two great-grandsons, William and Oliver; three nieces and two nephews; and a host of friends and neighbors who have come to know and love her. Preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, Frederick Young; and one sister, Annie Bradshaw.
