ARETTA WINTERS Aretta Winters was born the daughter of Schuyler and Margery (Barker) Youngs on Friday, January 13, 1928 in Plains, Kansas. They came to Newberg in 1937 where she attended school and graduated from Newberg High School. On January 19, 1957 Aretta was married to Arnold “Arny” Winters and they made their home in Dundee. In 1959 she was selected as “Yamhill County Mother of the Year”. Aretta attended beauty school in Portland, worked for Ethel Vedder at My Lady in Newberg, then owned and operated Youngs House of Beauty with her mother, Marge Youngs, retiring in 1988. She was an Elkette at Sherwood Robin Hood Elks Lodge No. 2342, Dandy Dancers and, for more than 50 years, was a member of National Hairdressers Association. After retirement, they enjoyed spending winters in Mesa, Arizona, golfing, and spending time with their family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arny preceded her in death, on February 22, 1992. For many years she league bowled with the team from Youngs House of Beauty. They were rodeo fans and enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. Shopping and travel were favorite pastimes. For the past fifteen years, Aretta struggled with Parkinson’s disease and on Monday, October 24, 2011, she died at her home in Dundee when she was 83 years, 9 months and 11 days of age. Surviving and left to honor her life are: Her daughters, Terri Rene Atkinson, and husband Greg, and Vicki Jo Winters, all of Dundee; Seven grandchildren, Brittany Dawn Kane, Nicole Goodman, Renee Atkinson, and Cheyenne, Cody, Cassidy and Jacki Merten; six great-grandchildren, Hailey, Amelia, Sidnee, Kennadi, Jayden and Tyler; numerous nieces and nephews including Larry Hall, Allen Smith, DeAnna Wilkins and Pam Schaubel; and those who have come to know and appreciate her where she has lived and worked. Her Funeral Service will be Friday, October 28, 2011 at 11 a.m. in Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, with Todd Hall officiating. Concluding Service with crypt entombment follows at Valley View Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Newberg. Viewing and Visitation hours are Thursday, October 27, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday, October 28, 9 a.m. to Service, at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel.
