Sylvia M Littlefield

After a fall and injury on February 4th, Sylvia departed her loving family on Saturday, February 13th, 2021. Sylvia was born in Greenleaf Idaho on March 7th, 1932 to Glenna Dines Tuning and Harlan (Harley) Tuning. She was raised in the small rural town of Greenleaf, Idaho. Her father was a “Ditch Rider” for the Bureau of Reclamation and was responsible for the distribution of water from the irrigation canals to the farmers. Greenleaf is a Quaker community and the location of the Greenleaf Friends Church and Academy. Sylvia and many of her family graduated from the Academy. Sylvia went to Cascade College in Portland, Oregon and graduated with a degree in Education. She signed her first teaching contract before she graduated in 1955. Sylvia taught in Salem, Portland and Tigard Public Schools until her youngest child (Sally) was born in 1968. Sylvia met Cyrus (Cy) Littlefield at the South Salem Friends Church. Cy’s brother-in-law John Fankhauser was the pastor at the church. They were married on January 22, 1960. Sylvia and Cy were parents to Dennis (1961), Craig (1964) and Sally (1968). She also loved Cy’s kids from a previous marriage: Doug (1949) and Dianna (1951). She was a committed Christian and active in various Quaker churches all her life. She often was a leader in music and children’s ministries. She was a gifted pianist and vocalist. After Cyrus’ retirement in 1988, they moved from Tigard where they had lived since 1960 to Newberg, Oregon. They worked part-time managing the West Wood Apartment complex. They also traveled and visited friends and relatives across the USA with their recreational vehicle. Cy passed away in 1999 and Sylvia moved into Friendsview Retirement Community in 2004. This caring senior community in Newberg included many of her lifelong friends she knew from growing up in Greenleaf, Idaho. She is survived by: Doug and Janet Littlefield of Lancaster, California. Diana and Tom Hatcher of Ventura, California. Dennis and Joan Littlefield of Newberg, Oregon. Craig and Lisa Littlefield of Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. Sally and Leon Strait are traveling full-time in their RV. Plus many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
