Marjorie Louise Howard

Marjorie Louise Howard was born in Wenatchee, Washington, on December 28, 1935 to parents Frederic and Gwendolyn Landis. She was reared in Victoria, B.C., Canada, later moving to Albany, Oregon, and Olympia, Washington, where she graduated from high school in 1953. Marj graduated from Simpson College in San Francisco (now Simpson University located in Redding, California) in 1957. It was at Simpson where she met Dave, the son of family friends, Harold and Leona Howard, and they were married in Redwood City, California on November 21st, 1957. She was office manager at newly-formed Christian radio station KEAR until the birth of their first daughter, Colleen. After the birth of their second daughter, Pearl, they moved to Newberg, Oregon, in 1968, where Dave began his teaching career at George Fox College (now University), Marj continued to be a stay-at-home Mom with her two daughters until 1970, after which she worked for ten years for various administrators at George Fox College. Marj's pursuits in life have been motivated by her deep love for God and family. Being a Preacher's Kid, she was always involved in many church-related activities. Her major in college was in the area of Christian Education for children and youth. She also loved singing in the church choirs that her husband directed and/or accompanied. Besides music, her other interests included travel, reading, and stitchery. Due to her great love for children, Marj took the opportunity of helping to care for and influence the lives of several young children as a nanny in her years of semi-retirement. That took place until her dear grandchildren were born. Nothing could compare to the pure joy of that time in her life. She is survived by her husband, Dave, of 66 years, daughters Colleen (husband Ben); Pearl Vanzant; the Jeffery grandchildren, Serendel, Luke, Jessamyn, Ruby; the Vanzant grandchildren Trask (wife, Alysa), Jade, Corbin, Cassady (husband Nathan), and Ronni Charlotte; great grandchildren Fiona MacPhereson, Odin and Emilia Hoff and Tilian Vanzant. Her parents, brothers Bob and John, sister, Joan (husband Jim) Comfort and grand-daughter, Jade, preceded her in death. Remembrances may be made to the music ministries at George Fox University, or Simpson University.
