John Roger Yates

In Memory of John Roger Yates John Roger Yates, age 80, of Dayton, Oregon, died on May 29, 2010. John died in the company of family and friends at Lava Lake, Oregon of sudden heart failure. John was born in 1930, in Blachly, Oregon, to Isaac and Agnes Yates. He grew up in the rural area around Eugene, Oregon, along with siblings, Barbara, Mary, David, and Richard. He moved to the Newberg area in his teens and graduated from Newberg High School in 1948. He married Colleen Bishop of Dundee, Oregon on April 16, 1950. John worked for Portland General Electric for 42 years, retiring as a journeyman lineman. In 1969 he and Colleen opened and operated the Little King Sandwich shop in Salem, Oregon, until 1975. After Colleen’s death, he met Jean McKinney of McMinnville, and they married on November 29, 1986. John was an active Mason as a young man. He was active in the community, spending 25 years as a volunteer fireman and volunteer fire chief in Dundee. He was a member of the Dundee Rod and Gun Club and the Elks in Sherwood. His pastimes over the years included woodworking, traveling, camping and especially fishing, which he truly loved. He was quick to make friends and loved the company of others. He especially loved all his grandchildren. John is survived by four sons, Brent Yates, of Dayton, Oregon, Keith Yates of Benton City, Washington, Dean Yates of Selah, Washington, and Todd McKinney of Monmouth, Oregon; two daughters, Lisa McKinney of McMinnville, Oregon, and Lynn Wiser, of Carlton, Oregon; his sister, Mary Tyra of Santa Cruz, California; 12 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Colleen Yates; his wife Jean Yates; his parents, Isaac and Agnes Yates; two brothers, Richard Yates and David Yates; his sister, Barbara Gute. His Funeral Service will be Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. Private Committal to be held in Valley View Memorial Park Cemetery.
