OBITUARY INFORMATION: Elizabeth Irene Powelson Long Wood Elizabeth Irene Powelson Long Wood was born the daughter of Thomas and Lila (Barron) Powelson on Wednesday, January 19, 1916 in San Diego, California. Irene grew up and attended schools in San Diego. She graduated from San Diego State College in 1936 where she earned her teaching credentials. While in school she participated in track and field. On July 3, 1936 she married Ernest Elmo Long. Ernie died on July 6, 1964. Irene taught for Mt. Diablo Unified School District. She retired from the school system in 1976. She was a Worthy Matron for Unity Chapter # 65, Order of the Eastern Start in Oakland, California. Irene was life member of Diablo Star Chapter # 214, Order of the Eastern Star in Orinda, California. She was very active with Alpha Delta Kappa teacher’s sorority. In July of 1968 Irene was married to Donald Clark Wood. Donald died in June of 1996. Irene was also a member of Knowles Chapter #12, Order of the Eastern Star in McMinnville. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Newberg. On Monday, November 22, 2010, Elizabeth Irene Long Wood died at a local nursing home when she was ninety-four years, ten months and three days of age. Surviving and left to honor her life are: Her son Earnest William Long and his wife Susan of Lincoln, California; her daughter Ruth Lilene Hughes and her husband, T.D. of Newberg; four grandchildren, Daniel Long of Sutherlin, Oregon, Cynthia Waldrod and family of Alameda, California, Kenneth Hughes and family of Murphy, Texas and Denise Heringer and family of Katy, Texas; six great-grandchildren, William Martin Long, David Waldrod, Derek Waldrod, Megan Victoria Heringer, Michelle Joy Hughes and Lauren Elizabeth Hughes; two stepdaughters, Betty Creese and her husband of Smartville, California, Donna Silva and her husband of Concord, California; and those who have come to know and appreciate her where she has lived and worked. Her Graveside Service will be Monday, November 29, at 1:00 p.m. in Oakmont Memorial Park, Lafayette, California. Her Memorial Service will be Thursday, December 2, at 11:00 a.m. Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, Newberg, with Pastor Peter Blank officiating.
