Dale Norman Schatz

Dale Schatz, life-long resident of the Chehalem Valley, passed peacefully on December 26th. He was a mechanically gifted, skilled craftsman who loved to laugh. He leaves behind a legacy of love, acceptance, and compassion. Dale was born Jan. 20, 1928 in Newberg, to Norman and Lena (Fankhauser) Schatz. Dale was a farmer at heart, growing up on King’s Grade on a peach farm during the Great Depression. It was here that he developed his mechanical skills that would last him throughout his life. In 1947 he married Patsy Ann Gerling and began an adventure that would last 58 years. The marriage produced three daughters that Dale and Pat loved and nurtured. They taught the girls the important lessons of family and hard work. Dale loved Oregon history and driving the back roads of the state while acting as a tour guide to his passengers. He enjoyed pointing out every native plant or creek and its importance. To him, nothing compared to the natural beauty of Oregon. He, so, loved his family and continually gifted them with his creations. Grandfather clocks, wall clocks, Kiddy-Kars, and much more decorate his families’ homes. He was greatly loved in return. Dale’s faith was his foundation. His deep commitment to the Lord was evidenced in his relationship to other people and to nature. At the end, Dale’s confidence in God’s plan for him gave him great peace as he surrendered himself and passed into God’s beauty where he was reunited with his wife and family. Dale was preceded in death by Patsy Ann in 2005. He is survived by his sister, Arlene (Schatz) Heller, and her children; his daughters, Pattie Sloan, and husband, Gary; daughter, Victoria Dale Spencer, and husband, Wayne; daughter, Kathy Brown, and husband, Rich.; cousin, Gloria Attrell, and husband, Leonard, son, Ron Attrell and husband Michael Dale’s grandchildren include Dale Sloan, and wife, Teresa; Joel Sloan; Brooke Spencer Klaudt, and husband, Matt; Kirk Brown, and wife, Ashley; and Brent Brown. He had seven great-grandchildren: Patrick Manness, Dahlia Rei Sloan, Kyla Ann Klaudt, Carson Brown, Porter Dale Brown, Keegan Brown, and Easton Brown. Dale had one great-great-grandchild, Heath Manness. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan 4 at 1:00 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to give generously to the charity of your choice. And always remember to do acts of kindness for others.
